Where it began
A journey that became a commitment.
In 2021, founder Harley Riar travelled through communities in Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Malawi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Botswana. What began as a desire to understand more of the world became a lasting commitment to families living with severe poverty.
The founder's story
Seeing hardship changed the meaning of help.
Harley grew up with security and opportunity in California. Her travels took her far beyond that familiar world—to Turkana and Lamu in Kenya; the Busoga region, Apoka, and Kidepo Valley in Uganda; communities in Burundi; and Ruarwe and Nkhata Bay in Malawi, as well as parts of Congo and Botswana.
She offered assistance during those travels, but left knowing that one-time help could never be enough. Give-Directly grew from that realization: lasting support requires trust, consistency, and a way for more people to take part.
